Variety‘sAwards Circuit is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year. It features the official predictions for the Oscars, Emmys, Grammys, and Tony Awards, curated by Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages reflect the current standings in the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any individual contender. As other formal (and informal) polls suggest, competitions are fluid and subject to change based on buzz and events. Predictions are updated every Thursday.
Weekly Commentary (Updated: June 20, 2024): Submissions may be down, but the Emmy race is still hotter than ever, and we could foresee a “dead heat,” which could be a sign that the little-known “2% rule” of the Television Academy could go into effect, and perhaps deliver more nominees than anticipated.
The “2% Rule” considers a 2% or less gap between nomination candidates to be a dead heat and includes both in nomination, e.g., in a category where the ideal number of nominations is five. The fifth and sixth top vote-getters are within 2% of each other; both are included in the nomination. This rule does not apply to categories where the ideal number of nominations is six. Only in the case of a tie between the 6th and 7th place vote-getters will there be seven nominees.
However, the TV Academy confirms to Variety the 2% rule is no longer in effect, since submissions now determine the number of nominees.
We’ve added lighting and technical camera predictions to the list.
Nominations-round voting is open from June 13 and closes on June 24 at 10:00 p.m. PT. Voting for peer group-specific top ten round panels (if applicable) takes place between June 28 and July 8. The Emmy nominations will be announced on July 17. The Creative Arts and Governors Gala ceremonies will occur over two nights on Sept. 7-8. The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards will air on ABC on Sunday, Sept. 15.
