The character Creasy is not based on a real person, but is inspired by real-life high-profile kidnappings. The story of Man on Fire is adapted from a novel by A. J. Quinnell, featuring the character in multiple adaptations.

Man On Fire is based on a book of the same name written by A.J Quinnell which was published in 1980. Despite not being based on a specific event, Quinnell took inspiration from two real-life events. The first was the kidnapping of a Singaporean businessman's eldest son, who was held for ransom.

In order to extract information from a kidnapper, Creasy duct tapes his hands to the steering wheel of his car, severs his fingers and cauterizes the stumps with a cigarette lighter (gore splatters the windshield during the severing). He then shoots the man and rolls the car off a cliff. The torture doesn't end there.

Creasy calls Daniel Sánchez and threatens to kill all of his family unless he gives himself up, but Sánchez reveals that Pita is still alive, and offers her in exchange for Aurelio and Creasy. He surrenders himself to Sánchez' men, after Pita is released to him.

In an alternate ending, Creasy does not succumb to his bullet wounds, but lives to confront The Voice (who is otherwise unseen in the film) in his office. After a verbal confrontation, Creasy kills himself and The Voice via suicide bombing using explosives planted in his rectum, a call-back to Fuentes' earlier death.

Seems to me that the reason why this movie isn't liked and known any better is because the world was not really ready yet for a this sort of action movie, at the time. It's more the sort of action-thriller we are accustomed to of seeing now days, with a better- and more slow build up to it.

That would just boost his characters single minded dedication to free the little girl above all else, with complete disregard for his own safety.
